This update contains, besides some bug fixes, just one major feature: The new updater.
With the button in the main menu you get access to the new update menu. There is a little overview about your game version, the newest version, number of changed files and the download size. Also new is the button to verify your local game files. The updater itself was also improved: It is now started to run in an own java virtual machine. Without all the dependencies loaded it is able to overwrite the libraries. This solves most issues where the updater crashed, did nothing or needed multiple tries. Thus the updater is more robust now. Of course, you have to wait for the next update to see the updater in action.
But the main work done since last update was to move the build process to a Jenkins server and to modularize to code. With the Jenkins server we now can easily archive the different versions, but more important also a snapshot of the full source code and the deobfuscation table. This makes us able to easily analyze stack traces of older game versions. The modularized code is meant to be highly reusable by ZombieFrag and so reducing significantly ZombieFrag's development time later. Lastly there is to mention that a ZombieFrag teaser is currently on process.
Most of the changes in this update shall make Mycelium look nicer: Your cells now have web of hyphens as background, the window has the Mycelium icon instead of the default icon, occasionally comets fly through space of the main menu, and the login menu was totally reworked and moved to before the main menu. For convenience there were two links added to the login menu, one to account creation and the second to the password reset page.
Gameplay changed a little, it's now able to abandon cells. Your attackers won't attack abandoned cells and abandoned cells can't drain energy from surrounding cells, causing them to starve slowly.
The map generator no longer spawns trees in water.
Fixed some typos in main menu (thanks to Knight_White_III for reporting).
Important notice: The ingame updater is still unstable. In case of the updater failing, crashing, or not working at all, just download the zip of the latest release and extract it into your Mycelium folder. Overwrite files when propted, this will not affect savegames, screenshots, etc.
Mycelium is a hexagon based strategy game. You control a fungus mycelium, your aim is to compete against other mycelia.
Even though your mycelium grow on its own, it's totally aimless. To take advantage you need to specialize your cells, control the expansion direction and coorporate with allied mycelias.
Specialized cells like attackers, harvesters or transport cells do their specific tasks much efficienter than the omnipotent basic cells. With targeting of hostile cells you can concentrate the attack or head the capture of resources and strategically important tiles.
If you want to give Mycelium a try, just create an account and download the installer. Be aware that Mycelium is in early alpha stage; the campaign is lacking and the half of cell types isn't implemented yet. But we are still searching for testers who would like to occasionally, or even regularly, test the new features and give feedback. Also, we can't totally exclude fatal crashes or freezes on some systems and, of course, we assume no liability or responsibility for any damages.
After its release Mycelium will cost about 10€, but for helpful alphatesters it'll always be free.
